Building Confidence is a Skill
Confidence is often seen as something you either have or you don’t—but in reality, it’s a skill that can be built, strengthened, and practiced over time. In both your professional and personal life, confidence directly impacts how you communicate with others, show up at work, and take on new challenges.
My point of view is that true confidence isn’t about perfection; it’s about preparation and intention. By identifying what makes you feel self-assured and turning those behaviors into repeatable habits, you can project confidence in any situation. This mindset shift helps professionals at all levels, from consultants to executives, stand out as calm, capable, and credible leaders.
[Dan Davidson, Managing Director at Landing Point Consulting, shares a proactive habit for building lasting confidence and how preparation can help professionals perform at their best.]
Key Takeaways
Confidence can be learned: It’s not innate. It’s a skill that improves with reflection and practice.
Reflect intentionally: Think about times you felt confident and identify what contributed to that mindset.
Create consistent habits: Write down five actions that help you feel your best and incorporate them into your weekly routine.
Preparation drives confidence: From refining your resume talking points to being mentally and physically prepared, preparation builds credibility.
Confidence stems from self-awareness and consistency. Professionals who identify the routines, actions, and preparation methods that make them feel composed are better equipped to navigate challenges, lead teams, and communicate effectively. It’s less about personality and more about intentionality—recognizing what boosts your sense of readiness and making it a repeatable process.

Dan Davidson:
Confidence inspires confidence. And while you might think that some people are born with confidence, I think it’s a skill—and I think it can be learned.
I would challenge everyone to reflect on an experience where you truly felt confident and identify what made that moment stand out. Write those attributes down, and then narrow them to five things you could be doing regularly.
It could be something as simple as getting a haircut, wearing a new suit, or being prepared with your talking points. For candidates, that might mean reviewing your resume and tightening how you present your experiences.
All of those are examples of actions that can help you build confidence.
