Interview preparation is one of the most critical steps in the job search process, yet it’s often underestimated by candidates. While most professionals take time to research a company, review the job description, and prepare answers independently, many overlook one of the most valuable resources available to them: their recruiter.
Employers aren’t just evaluating your experience; they’re assessing how well you understand the role, the team, and the company’s expectations. Developing that level of insight requires more than standard individual preparation.
In this video, Sydney O’Brien, Associate on Landing Point’s Consulting team, explains why preparing with your recruiter can give you an advantage in the interview process.

Key Takeaways
Many candidates approach interviews with a simple checklist: review the company website, study the job description, and prepare for common questions. While these steps are important, they often only lead to a high-level understanding of the opportunity.
What’s missing is context.
Recruiters work closely with hiring managers and teams behind the scenes, giving them access to insights that aren’t publicly available. This can include details about an interviewer’s style, what the team truly values, specific gaps they’re looking to fill, and what success in the role looks like beyond the job description. These nuances can shape how you position your experience in a far more targeted and effective way.
Without this perspective, candidates risk delivering answers that can feel generic. With it, they can tailor their responses, emphasize the most relevant aspects of their background, and demonstrate a clear understanding of what the company is looking for.
Taking the time to prepare with your recruiter also signals a high level of intent. It shows that you’re thoughtful in your approach and serious about the opportunities they are presenting you with, qualities that will also resonate with hiring managers.
In a competitive hiring environment, preparation is often what separates strong candidates from standout ones. Leveraging your recruiter as a strategic partner, not just a point of contact, can make the difference in moving forward and securing the job.

Sydney O’Brien:
I think that a pretty common mistake that candidates make is not valuing preparation before an interview. Prepping on your own is really important, and I trust that most people do that. But carving out some time to prep with your recruiter is imperative and can certainly make or break moving on to another round or receiving an offer.
As a recruiter, it is my job to provide you with very specific insight about the firm, the person you’re meeting with, or the team you’re interviewing for that you will not find in a job description, on a firm website, or on Google, Glassdoor, or wherever it is you get your information.
So taking the time to speak with your recruiter can give you an incredibly competitive edge.
